What Is Goetta, Anyway?

Goetta (pronounced get-uh) is a Cincinnati classic—a savory, crispy, pork-and-oat sausage that traces its roots back to German immigrants. It started as a way to stretch meat during tough times, but it became something much more: a breakfast icon, a regional obsession, and for many of us, a non-negotiable weekend ritual.

Each summer, the Queen City throws an all-out celebration of this local legend at Glier’s Goettafest—an eight-day festival spread across two weekends in Newport, Kentucky, right along the Ohio River.

It’s more than just a food fest. It’s a full-blown Cincinnati cultural experience with live music, carnival games, local vendors, and every type of goetta creation you can imagine. Goetta pizza? Yep. Goetta egg rolls? You bet. Goetta ice cream? Somehow, that too.
